Dead domains (sort of): TDS Telecom offloading email service

Another regional internet service provider is getting out of the consumer mailbox hosting business. TDS Telecom has announced that it is winding down inbox hosting, handing off email duties to third-party mailbox provider Everymail.

If you manage email list hygiene or deliverability, this is a transition to keep on your radar, because a non-trivial chunk of legacy ISP subscribers are about to be required to pay or abandon their inboxes.

TDS Telecom subscribers who wish to retain their existing email addresses are being required to sign up for a paid subscription through Everyone.net. Customers must opt in and sign up for a paid Everyone.net plan by October 31, 2026. Users who do not sign up for the paid service by the deadline will lose access to their accounts. Unsubscribed mailboxes will be shut down, and all stored emails will be permanently deleted.

You can review the full notification of this change from TDS Telecom for specific subscriber instructions.

Over the years, TDS Telecom has acquired multiple regional broadband providers, carrying their legacy domain footprints along with them. We assume this transition will impact all domains hosted on the TDS email infrastructure, including top regional consumer and commercial domains: tds.net, dsmanagedip.com, somtel.com, bendbroadband.com, bendcable.com, uslink.net, gadsdenclerk.com, tdstelme.com, and chorus.net. (For a deeper dive into the scope of this footprint, check out the list of the 26 largest email domains hosted by TDS, sourced from the Wombatmail top ten million domains dataset.)

Senders: When ISPs shift from free bundled email to paid models, users abandon mailboxes and addresses churn. If your subscriber base includes a notable concentration of TDS-hosted addresses, here is what you should do:
  • Proactive Outreach (Pre-Transition): Don't wait until November to clean your list. Contact your TDS-hosted subscribers now invite them to provide an alternate email address.
  • Monitor Bounces Closely (Post-Transition): After October 31, 2026, any un-migrated accounts will be closed. Watch your delivery logs closely for hard bounces (5xx codes indicating invalid/non-existent mailboxes) from these domains.
  • Suppress: Stop sending to addresses that hard bounce post-deadline. Continuing to blast dead email addresses will hurt your sender reputation.
