Gmail Tabs: Friend or Foe?


With the announcement (and subsequent launch) of Apple Mail's categorization functionality, email marketers have been concerned, wondering how this tab-like organization mechanism might impact the success of their email campaigns.

Though Apple's functionality is new (first announced in June 2024, launched in December 2024), folks would be wise to remember that we’ve been down this road before, going all the way back to Gmail’s launch of tabs/categories way back in 2013.

Thus, email senders have had a good long time to get familiar with the tabbed inbox already. So let us review Gmail tabs -- what they are, what marketers need to know, and how popular ARE they, actually? Because a lot of that same guidance and understanding, that we've come to learn over these past years, will also readily apply in this new-ish world of Apple categories.
