Here’s a fun-but-simple exercise: Take the list of top 10 million domains. Look for all of the domains for a given country’s TLD, in this case, .jp. Let’s look at the MX records for those and see who hosts mail for the most Japanese domains. This doesn’t mean that a given mailbox provider hosts the largest number of mailboxes; it just means that a significant number of domains have MX records pointed at a given provider.
This is not a region where I am very familiar with the providers. But I do note that are our old friends Google and Microsoft are here, showing up number three and number six, respectively. Not leading the pack, but still significantly represented.
