The Verge is reporting that the team behind Thunderbird, the open-source email client managed by MZLA Technologies Corporation (a subsidiary of nonprofit organization Mozilla), is developing "pro tier" services that include an email service, called Thundermail.
With a goal of providing a privacy-focused alternative to mainstream email providers, email users will be able to choose email addresses at the domains thundermail.com and tb.pro. This is part of a broader effort called "Thunderbird Pro," which aims to provide additional premium services, not just the email service, including an appointment scheduler, file-sharing tools, and some form of AI-powered assistance tools.
Neat idea, but I'm certainly skeptical about the paid email service drawing enough users to become a significant force as a mailbox provider. But we shall see.
