SPF Alignment in Google Workspace

Hey, a common question I've been seeing and hearing a lot lately is one related to the topic of how to deal with SPF alignment for alias domains in Google Workspace. An alias domain is where you map a second email domain on top of your existing one, and Google allows you to send and receive mail to/from alias addresses at the new domain. It works well, but there's a limitation in how they've implemented SPF specific to alias domains and people often assume problem or failure where they shouldn't.

So, in my Valimail "Ask Al" video for today, I explain exactly what that limitation is and what you need to know about using alias and secondary domains in Google Workspace, and why lack of SPF alignment is not a failure. View it above or find it here on Youtube.

  1. google claims this spf alignment issue is not a problem, but unfortunately incorrectly configured spam filtering solutions wrongfully pay too much attention to the SPF misalignment, causing emails to fail being delivered. We can't fix stupid email filtering by the receiving side, but Google COULD fix the alignment problem by using the same FROM and RETURN-PATH values when using a properly configured Alias domain. I view this as a google failure.
