Fun with data: Mimecast, by the numbers

Just a quick little peek at data today. This time around, it's month-by-month counts of MX records, in the top ten million domains, that point at servers with "Mimecast" in the domain name referenced in those records.

Mimecast is a secure email gateway (SEG) platform that filters out the inbound bad stuff, in front of a traditional corporate email platform like Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace. As of February 2025, they show up for 35,264 of the top ten million domains. This makes Mimecast number fifteen in MX provider ranking, with of course, Google and Microsoft, much bigger, leading the way at numbers one and two.

You can find out more about Mimecast in a previous post I've made here, and I've compiled some sender specific deliverability guidance for Mimecast here.

The MX record data suggests that they peaked at a bit over 40,000 domains in early 2024, but that didn't seem to hold over time, dipping down later, and now holding relatively flat at just over 35,000 domains making reference to Mimecast in their MX records.
