Dead domain: cfu.net (in 2025)

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that Iowan utility provider Cedar Falls Utilities is retiring email service for the cfu.net domain.

Find more on the shutdown here from CFU. They warn that:

  • Account holders with last names A-G will lose email service on July 1, 2025.
  • Account holders with last names H-N will lose email service on September 1, 2025.
  • Account holders with last names O-Z will lose email service on November 1, 2025.

The Courier reports that there are "about 3000" CFU email accounts, and CFU is recommending that users consider moving to Gmail. According to the paper, current CFU accounts allow for email forwarding and can be configured with an auto-reply to direct friends to contact CFU email users at their new email address.

Email senders, if your email list is Iowa-focused and/or contains a significant number of cfu.net subscribers, now might be a good time to contact them to request updated contact information, ahead of the final system shutdown.
