FTC fines Verkada over CAN-SPAM violations

The US Federal Trade Commission very recently announced that they’re imposing a $2.95 million fine against security camera firm Verkada for, among other things, violating CAN-SPAM, the US Federal anti-spam law.

The FTC notes that this is the largest ever CAN-SPAM fine that they have successfully levied.

How did Verkada violate CAN-SPAM? “By flooding prospective customers with a barrage of commercial emails and failing to include the option to unsubscribe or opt-out, honor opt-out requests, and provide a physical postal address in the emails.”

“Verkada relied on commercial email campaigns to help market its products, sending more than 30 million commercial emails over a three-year period. Verkada’s commercial emails violated the CAN-SPAM Act in four ways, including not honoring email recipients’ requests to unsubscribe.”

Remember folks, having a working unsubscribe matters! CAN-SPAM actions may be rare, but they still happen.
