Email service OnMail to shut down

OnMail, Edison Software's privacy-focused email service, will officially shut down on July 31, 2025. This marks the end of their attempt to reimagine the inbox experience with features like sender approval, anti-tracking protections, and custom domain support.

I first covered OnMail back in September 2020, when it launched as a potential alternative to services like HEY, claiming to offer a permission-based inbox, blocking tracking pixels, and even a free tier, though I noted at the time that the free option was not accessible to me during signup. You may also recall that Edison also asked users to opt in to share de-identified purchase data for its Edison Trends analytics business.

If you're an OnMail user and want to make sure your email keeps working, you’ll need to take action before the platform goes dark at the end of July. Find more information about exporting your account data or transferring your custom domain via Onmail’s support site.

  1. Sad to see OnMail shutting down — they really pushed forward some good ideas around permission-based inboxes and sender approval. It shows how much demand there is for people to take back control of their email.

I’ve been working on something similar with ACEGI.io, where trusted contacts flow into your inbox freely, and unknown senders hit a small paywall. It’s another way to make sure your inbox is intentional and uncluttered — without losing the ability for new, meaningful connections to reach you.

It’ll be interesting to see what former OnMail users look for next — my bet is that inboxes designed around control and trust will only keep growing.
