Almost every mailbox provider is going to have a system issue every once in a while. Some more, some less, but everything catches on fire eventually. Some providers are good enough to maintain system status dashboards and uptime status displays to help you understand if that issue you're hearing about is widespread or not.
Here's links to a few of those different dashboards.
1&1 (not clear if this includes GMX/web.de/mail.com): IONOS Status Page
In addition, there are two third-party sites that can provide crowdsourced information on various outages (not just limited to email): IsItDownRightNow? and Downdetector.
I wish more providers offered up status and uptime information in this way. Dear readers, can you think of any providers that do offer this information, and that I should add to this list? If so, please let me know!

(And isn't that a cute little dumpster fire toy? You should buy one.)
