Not a dead email domain: gci.net

Mmm...never mind!

As reported by the Anchorage Daily News, Alaska Public Media and others, Alaskan telecommunications provider GCI, having previously announced back in 2023 that they were getting out of the email business, have decided to reverse course and will no longer be shutting down their email services

GCI indicates that users will be able to keep existing email accounts. They note, however, that users who wish to continue to have access to GCI's email service will incur a fee of $4.99/month.

Scanning the top ten million domains, this seems to cover the domains alaskan.com, ak.net, gci.net and alaskalife.net. Anchorage Daily News suggested that this would have impacted more than 40,000 email accounts.

GCI had previously suggested that users consider switching to Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, iCloud Mail, or Godaddy, and users had expressed frustration at the difficulty and complexity of exporting their existing GCI email history.

Though the planned shutdown has been canceled, that ongoing fee sure seems likely to drive away existing email users. I'm guessing that many users may still continue to migrate away, and that engagement will drop over time for that GCI email audience.
